You don't need a 120,000 square foot fabrication shop to learn engineering principles. The best way to understand mechanics, structures, and electricity is to build things with your own hands using everyday materials.
Challenge: Build a bridge spanning 12 inches using only 10 sheets of printer paper and tape, then see how many coins it can hold. This teaches the concept of corrugation and structural geometry—folding paper into triangles or tubes drastically increases its load-bearing capacity compared to flat sheets.
Using empty thread spools, pencils, and string, construct a single, double, and triple pulley system. Try lifting a heavy book with each configuration. This is a perfect, tactile demonstration of mechanical advantage and how trading distance for force makes heavy lifting easier.
Grab a 9-volt battery, some copper wire, a small LED, and a switch (or make one using a paperclip and thumbtacks). Building a basic circuit teaches the fundamentals of electrical flow, resistance, and conductivity—the very same principles underlying our advanced robotic welding cells.
